Attraction Marketing: The New MLM Strategy

The first MLMs started many years ago and had the structure that is still familiar, salespeople selling a product and also trying to recruit others into the business. MLMs that had a good product and enjoyed good network growth succeeded and endured, while others failed. In fact success in an MLM was usually dependant on how successful they were in getting others to join. Now many years later, and with the creation of the internet, there are some who feel that the old MLM model has evolved into a new strategy referred to as Attraction Marketing.

Selling the Salesperson

Attraction marketing is said to have two main approaches, with the first being the selling of the salesperson. This is based on the theory that people buy from people they like, and who they feel are competent and honest. In MLMs there can be several salespeople working in the same geographic area, maybe even on the same block. Since they are all selling the same products at the same price, the salesperson has to find ways to attract the customers to them. They have to sell themselves as the best option. Salespeople can do this by establishing a strong online presence with a great website and targeted advertising. Once they attract the customers, they keep them with excellent customer service and attention to the consumers needs. Consumers and potential recruits will begin to see the salesperson as successful, as someone who knows what they are doing and someone they want to do business with.

Selling the System

Because much more money can be made recruiting new people to the MLM, salespeople will also have to sell the system, which is the second approach of attraction marketing. Once they get someone interested in the MLM they want to get them into the company and part of their sales force. To sell the system they have to be positive and excited about what they are doing. If they have already sold themselves successfully, they have a good chance at selling the system. Again, people want to work and buy from people they like and admire. If a potential recruit believes in the salesperson and the potential for financial success, then they are likely to begin believing in the salesperson’s system.

Dedicated Followers

The ultimate goal of selling themselves and the system is to create a sales force of dedicated followers. Depending on the compensation system of the MLM, the original salesperson will earn a percentage of the sales generated by their recruits.

So that original salesperson needs to inspire their sales force to sell a lot. If the original sales person is positive and passionate about what he is doing, then that will transfer to his sales force. He needs to fill them with a passion and energy about the MLM and its product. The original salesperson is the leader, and if he has successfully sold himself, then he will attract recruits who can be developed into motivated salespeople who generate income for themselves, the leader, and the MLM.
